Lufthansa to acquire a 24.9 per cent stake in Eurowings
Eurowings verkauft Anteile an Lufthansa
Lufthansa German Airlines will take out a 24.9 per cent stake in the equity capital of Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG with effect from 1 January 2001. The agreement between Lufthansa and Eurowings is subject to approval by the Lufthansa Supervisory Board on 6 December 2000. Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Jürgen Weber informed the Supervisory Board on 20 September of the plans. "The equity shareholding in Eurowings will enable us to strengthen our position in the air traffic market in North Rhine-Westphalia," said Jürgen Weber. "This market is hotly contested. The cooperation agreement will permit more non-stop flights into Europe's business centres, and allow Eurowings to expand its programme on domestic routes in Germany." Eurowings will remain an independent airline with its own distinct brand image. Lufthansa and Eurowings plan to start cooperating more closely in European scheduled traffic in the course of next year. Eurowings will also be a member of Miles & More and thus become the 28th partner airline to participate in Lufthansa's frequent flyer programme. If no objections are raised by the anti-trust authorities, Lufthansa plans to increase its Shareholding in Eurowings.

SIA to order A3XX
A3XX-Bestellung von Singapore Airlines
Singapore Airlines (SIA) is to become the first airline in the world to operate the all-new 555 seat A3XX, following the announcement by the carrier of its decision to purchase up to 25 aircraft. The agreement, subject to industrial launch of the programme, covers firm orders for 10 passenger aircraft, plus 15 options for both the freighter and passenger versions. The first A3XX will be delivered to Singapore Airlines in the first quarter of 2006, with subsequent deliveries of the firm order aircraft continuing through to 2007. The airline will deploy the A3XX on services to London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney. Said Dr Cheong Choong Kong, SIA's Deputy Chairman and CEO: "Our decision to be a pioneer for this latest aircraft type is further evidence of SIA's determination to stay ahead of the field in product and service. The A3XX is the latest in aircraft technology." Airbus has now received firm commitments for a total of 32 A3XX aircraft from four customers. In addition to Singapore Airlines, the other companies which have signed firm commitments for the aircraft are Emirates Airlines of Dubai, Air France and US leasing company ILFC.
Boeing meanwhile said it remains committed to the 747X family of airplanes despite Singapore Airlines' announcement: "We are very confident in the viability of the 747X Family in the long-term. It's a tremendous family that offers superior economics and value in terms of many of the factors considered in an airline's purchasing and operating decisions, including seat-mile costs, fuel efficiency, fleet commonality, pilot and mechanic training, and much more. The 747X Family can be integrated easily into airlines' existing fleets while offering the capacity, range and speed needed to meet evolving market demand."

ÖAMTC orders eleven EC 135
Großauftrag des ÖAMTC für Eurocopter
Eurocopter's EC 135 continues its market success, as proven by the Austrian Automobile Association's (ÖAMTC) purchase of eleven light-twin helicopters for air rescue purposes. The EC 135 was selected as winner against strong competition from Europe and the US. The EC 135 is a twin-engine light helicopter of the three tonne category with state-of-the-art construction and conception. Since its introduction on the market in 1996, over 200 EC 135 helicopters have been sold to 50 customers. It is certified in 17 countries. Numerous optional and special equipment kits for the EC 135 are also certified and in use. At present, seven EC 135 helicopters are already in service with the ÖAMTC. The new order makes the ÖAMTC the largest EC 135 operator world-wide. The order has been placed following the Austrian Ministry of Interior's authorisation of the ÖAMTC to operate its air rescue services. The ÖAMTC will take over the eight air rescue stations which have up to now been government maintained; the additional eleven EC 135 helicopters have been purchased to accomplish the growing number of tasks. With a total of 13 stations, the ÖAMTC will then have one of the most densely serviced air rescue networks in Europe. The first EC135 is to be delivered in December 2000; in early 2002 the fleet will have reached its full size.

British Airways and KLM end talks
Keine Fusion zwischen BA und KLM
British Airways and KLM have announced that they will not be proceeding any further in their talks on a possible combination of their businesses. Rod Eddington, Chief Executive of British Airways, and Leo van Wijk, Chief Executive of KLM, said: "We have emphasised throughout that there was no assurance that our discussions would lead to a deal. "We always recognised that this would be a complex transaction, involving not only commercial and economic issues, but also aeropolitical, regulatory and other matters. Although we made considerable progress, it has not been possible to resolve these. "Although relations between the two parties remain amicable, we have had to decide to draw a line under these negotiations." Rod Eddington added: "In the meantime, we will continue to take steps to improve the performance of our company, through our fleet and network strategy, through continued product improvement and by working with our established alliance and franchise partners."

Boeing: Freighter Fleet to double
Wachstumsmarkt Frachter
During the next 20 years, the world's freighter airplane fleet is expected to double, with the greatest growth taking place in widebody freighters, according to the Boeing World Air Cargo Forecast 2000/2001. "Nearly 70 percent of the fleet additions will come from modified passenger and combi airplanes," said Randy Baseler, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group vice president - Marketing. "This differs significantly from the passenger airplane market, due to the increasing availability of desirable, affordable airplanes that can be obtained and modified for a lower acquisition cost than new equipment." The forecast predicts that the long-term air cargo market will grow at an average rate of 6.4 percent over the next 20 years -- a tripling of the market. Air cargo growth is expected to exceed passenger traffic growth in every major region. Baseler said the world freighter fleet is expected to nearly double from 1,676 airplanes in 1999 to nearly 3,200 by the year 2019. During that time, the industry is expected to add more than 2,600 freighter airplanes, as nearly 1,100 current freighters will be retired. Of the 2,600 new freighters, about 1,800 airplanes will come from passenger-to-freighter modifications and 800 airplanes will be new production freighters.
"We will see particularly robust growth in Asia," Baseler said. "Compared to the world average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent per year, intra-Asia will average 8.6 percent, Europe-Asia will average 7.2 percent and North America-Asia will average 7.7 percent. This phenomenal growth will increase the market share of the Asian markets. World air cargo traffic rebounded during 1999, increasing 5.7 percent, after a disappointing 1998, in which traffic increased by less than one percent as a result of the Asian economic crisis.

Lufthansa Flight Training's complete course of computer-based training (CBT) will henceforth be available to airline customers in Vienna too. A cooperation agreement making this possible was signed today in the Austrian capital by Niki Lauda, head of Lauda Air, and Dieter Harms, managing director of Lufthansa Flight Training. LFT's extensive CBT software for training pilots and cabin crews of other airlines is being installed in the hardware of Lauda Air's 25 learning stations. Flight crews will be able to train directly at the Vienna-Schwechat airport, on the Lauda Air base at the World Trade Center. This is the second cooperation agreement to be signed within the framework of the Star Alliance CBT Network created in 1999. It further strengthens training cooperation among the Star Alliance members. LFT signed the first such agreement in the middle of last year with SAS Flight Academy. Cooperation with Lauda Air, now officially formalized, had been occurring previously on a smaller scale. Pilots of Denmark's Maersk Air were already being trained in Vienna with LFT software to fly the Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ).
