The Boeing 737-700 is part of the new-generation 737-family, which features
  • a new wingwith increases in chord and span, for an increase in fuel capacity and efficiency
  • higher cruise speed
  • more range
  • new engines with better fuel burn and lower noise
  • new, flexible interior
  • new display system from 777
  • new landing gear, wheels, brakes and tires
Design studies started in 1991, with input from 30 airlines. Formal offers from June 1993, with Southwest becoming launch customer in November of that year. At the Farnborough Air Show in September 1994, first orders for the -800 were announced, and SAS became the launch customer for the -600 in March 1995. Major assembly started at the end of 1995. Rollout was in December 1996, and in the same month the engine got its FAA certification. First flight of the 737-700 took place on February 9, 1997. Certification is expected in September, with launch customer Southwest Airlines receiving its first aircraft in October.
