Around 200 hours of flight tests were completed vefore this powerplant/airframe combination was certified on 18 December 1996 by the JAA. On the same day, the A319 got its approval from the Russian Interstate Aviation Register.
The first A319 user was Swissair, which got its aircraft on 25 April 1996 and started services on 30 April. The 25th A319 was completed in February 1997.
