Costs (Kosten) List price for the A330-300 was quoted as 124 to 131 million US-Dollars in mid-1998. Competition (Konkurrenz) Boeing 767-300 Remarks (Bemerkungen) With the A330, Airbus intends to offer the airlines an alternative to older tri-jets like the DC-10 or Lockheed L-1011. The aircraft should also replace older 767 and A300 fleets. In contrast to the A340, which was designed to fly on extreme long-distance routes, the A330 serves regional and medium distance routes. Both planes use a lot of common structures and system parts to reduce the costs of development, production and maintenance. According to Airbus, especially the improved use of fly-by-wire-systems, composite materials and a new designed wing increases the aircrafts efficiency. History (Geschichte) The 330-300 is the basic model of the A330 family. The programme started in June 87 and the first aircraft (F-WWKA) took off on 2 November 1992. Certification by the FAA and the JAA was achieved simultaneous on 23 October 1993 (with GE engines). Airline deliveries started in December 1993 (Air Inter). During the test flight program in June 1994, an A330-300 crashed close to the Toulouse-Blangnac airport, when the pilots simulated an engine failure. Three crewmembers and four observators died. The first A 330-300 ETOPS-service across the North Atlantic was established by Aer Lingus in May 1994 (with GE CF6-90E1 engines). Further extensions of ETOPS up to 180 Minutes have been granted in February 1995 (GE engines), August 1995 (P&W engines) and June 1996 (R&R engines). To stop the decreasing rate of A330-300 sales in the mid-nineties, Airbus launched the A330-200 programme in 1995.
