Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The BRJ-X would have been an all-new design to extend the Bombardier regional-jet family at the upper end of current offerings (CRJ200, CRJ700, CRJ900). After starting out as a 90-seat design, ist evolved into a 100 to 115 seat aircraft.

History (Geschichte)
At the Farnborough Air Show in September 1998, Bombardier announced its intention enter the 90seat regional jet market. This followed a study on such an aircraft which had been launched soon after the start of the 70-seat CRJ Series 700 series in January 1997.
In November, 14 airlines from seven countries attended the first BRJ-X Airline Advisory Council in Montreal, where they could voice their preferences on layouts and systems. The main theme seems to have been that no technology is interesting if it does not lead to the lowest possible operating cost.
By September 1999, about 260 hours of wind-tunnel testing had been conducted. Also, powerplant integration testing was completed at the ARA facility in England. Ongoing discussion with airlines had led to some performance changes, for example a slight reduction in cruise speed.
As the airlines had told Bombardier they want FBW, a Canadair Challenger business jet was used since June 1999 to test Active Control Technology, to develop hands-on fly-by-wire experience.
A decision to proceed with development had been expected in the third quarter of 1999, but this was put back to mid-2000. By that time, risk-sharing partners should have been selected to be involved in a joint conceptional definition phase before the design was frozen. In July, Bombardier had to admit that a launch in 2000 would not take place. Finally, in December 2000, the programme was put on "indefinite hold".
It had been planned to fly the BRJ-X in the first quarter of 2003, attain Transport Canada type certification in the second quarter of 2004 and start deliveries in the third quarter of that year.
