  • additional tankage in the rear fuselage to increase range
  • a strengthened undercarriage to cope with higher take-off and landing weights
  • Collins Pro Line 4 avionics with sic large EFIS displays
  • a strengthened tail unit
  • new wing to fuselage and underbelly fairings

History (Geschichte)
After acquiring the design rights of Bill Lears design and making many changes to the original concept, Canadair flew the first Challenger on 8 November 1978. Certification was achieved in late 1980, and deliveries of the Challenger 600 ended in 1983 after 84 were built.
Further development led to the following versions:
  • Challenger 601-1A. Switch to the General Electric CF34 engines. Maiden flight on September 17, 1982. 66 built until May 1987.
  • Challenger 601-3A with CF34-3A engines which are flat rated to higher temperatures. Honeywell digital avionics introduced. First flight on 28. September 1986. 134 built until October 1993.
  • Challenger 601-3R. Fuel tank in the tail, which was available as an opiton from 1989 fitted as standard. 59 built until early 1996.
  • Challenger 604. The programme was officially launched in February 1993. First flight occured on 18. September 1994. FAA certification was achieved in November 1995, and deliveries of "green" aircraft began in January 1996.
The 100th Challenger 604 was handed over in mid-1999.
The 500th Challenger, a 604 model, was delivered to Christos Cotsakos, chairman and chief executive officer of E-Trade, at the eve of NBAA on 9 October 2000 in New Orleans.
