Remarks (Bemerkungen)
Embraer first proposed a jet-powered derivative of its EMB-120 regional turboprop in June 1989, but financial difficulties delayed the programme, which was also plagued by various design concept changes. In 1991, a completely new wing, underwing engine installation and new landing gear were introduced, only to be superseded in September 1991 by the current configuration with rear mounted engines.
The EMB-145 (now renamed as the ERJ145 (Embraer Regional Jet), features maximum commonality with the EMB-120 and CBA-123 Vector. It takes advantage of state of the art technology, but only where it contributes to reduce costs.
A programme office was established in January 1992. Starting in July 1992, Embraer signed risk-sharing partnership contracts with the following companies:
  • Gamesa, of Spain (wings, nacelles, wing/fuselage fairings, main landing gear dooors and leading edges)
  • C&D Interiors, of the USA (passenger cabin/cargo compartment interiors)
  • Sonaca, of Belgium (center fuselage, leading edges, main door, rear fuselage, pylons and baggage door)
  • Enaer, of Chile (vertical fin, horizontal stabilizers and elevators)
Final designs freeze was in January 1994, with Assembly of the EMB-135 prototype beginning in October 1994. The first flight followed on 11 August 1995, even before the official roll-out. Three pre-series aircraft were built, as well as two static test airframes, as follows:
  • Preseries (PT-ZJB), first flown 17. November 1995
  • Preseries (PT-ZJC), first flown 14. February 1996
  • Preseries (PT-ZJD), first flown 2. April 1996.
Brazilian and US-FAA certification was achieved on 16. December 1996 after a flight test programme of around 1600 hours. Deliveries began three days later, with two aircraft being handed over to US launch customer Continental Express. By the end of 1997, there were 35 aircraft in service with five airlines. They accumulated 27871 flights with an average daily utilization of 6,36 hours.
The EMB-145 was first offered in a basic version, with weights slightly lower than stated here. Since early 1997, the ER-variant is regarded as standard, with the LR-version offering still higher weights for longer range services.
An airborne early warning variant will be built for the Brazilian SIVAM project (surveillance of the Amazon region). This is fitted with an Ericsson Erieye radar and readily distingushed by the long antenna on top of the fuselage. Up to five are required. For remote sensing operations in connection with SIVAM, the EMB-145RS is planned, with three to be built.
Also, a further derivative with a shortened fuselage is now offered as the ERJ 135.
