Competition (Konkurrenz) Fairchild Dornier 428JET Remarks (Bemerkungen) The ERJ 140 is a new member of the Embraer family of regional jets, fitting between the ERJ 135 and ERJ 145. It offers more than 96 per cent commonality, including the same crew type rating. Starting from the ERJ 135, the main changes are:
History (Geschichte) It seems that the ERJ 140 evolved from initial discussions with American Eagle, which has a scope clause restriction on aircraft with 45 seats or more. The launch of the ERJ 140 was announced on 30. September 1999 at the European Regional Airlines Association Convention in Paris. The first flight of the ERJ 140 took place on 27 June 2000. Aboard the prototype, registered PT-ZJA, were Embraer test pilots Daniel Chun and Paulo César Remião accompanied by flight test engineer Roberto Becker. Taking-off from São José dos Campos' runway at 11:21 am, the new jetliner attained a speed of 320 kts (Mach 0.78) and an altitude of 37.000 ft. during its maiden flight. The aircraft should be certified in February 2001 and available from the first quarter of 2001, far in advance of the rival Fairchild 428JET, which in any way was cancelled in August 2000.
