Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The G100, formerly known as the IAI 1125 Astra SPX, fits into the mid-size business jet class, with a stand-up cabin. It can fly US transcontinental routes against typical headwinds and offers high cruise performance.. Based on a long line of business jets, its main improvements over the immediately preceding Astra SP were
  • winglets
  • Rockwell Collins Pro Line 4 avionics with four screens
  • more powerful engines with FADEC and Dee Howard thrust reversers
  • increased weights

History (Geschichte)
The G100 can trace its histoy back to the US Aero Commander 1121 Jet Commander on 1963. Israel Aircraft Industries took over that model and developed it intothe 1125 model launched at the NBAA Conventionin October 1979. It was named Astra in 1981, and 37 were built. The next step was the Astra SP of 1989, of which 37 were produced.
The Astra SPX first flew on 16 August 1994. It was unveiled at the NBAA convention at New Orleans in October that year. Certification by the FAA was granted on 8 January 1996, after 350 flight test hours. Production deliveries began in early 1996. By September 1997, eleven aircraft were in service.
Two SPX, outfitted by Tracor Flight Systems, were deliverd to the US Air National Guard in April and May 1998.
In May 1998, the FAA approved an Astra SPX service bulletin outlining the steps required to certify individual aircraft for RVSM compliance. Israeli approval was obtained in February.
On 1. May 2001, General Dynamics (parent of Gulfstream Aerospace) announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Galaxy Aerospace, the Astra SPX and Galaxy marketing company in the USA, for 330 million US-Dollars in cash. An additional 315 million US-Dollars will be paid later depending on specific revenue targets. With this transaction, General Dynamics/Gulfstream got an immediate presence in the super mid-size and mid-size markets, the fastest growing segment of the business aircraft market.
The Astra SPX was renamed the G100 in June 2001, with the official introduction being made at the Paris air show that month. IAI will continue manufacture of the G100, with outfitting operations in the USA.
