Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The JL-9, also known as the FTC-2000, is a further development of the JJ-7/FT-7, which is in essence a MiG-21U variant in service with the PLAAF. New features include:
  • a new double delta wing with outboard sections of less sweep, as on the J-7E fighter
  • lateral air intakes like the FC-1
  • solid nose which enables installation of a radar
  • improved cockpit

History (Geschichte)
The FTC-2000 was revealed in model form at Airshow China in November 2000. At that time, wind tunnel tests were completed.
A full scale mockup of the FTC-2000 was shown at the airshow in Zhuhai in 2002.
Three prototypes will be built.
First flight of the JL-9 “Shanying” (Mountain Eagle) was completed on 13 December 2003 at the Shuangyang plant in Guizhou province, with test pilot Qian Zhaoquan at the controls.
Deliveries could start in 2005.
