Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The "Super Efficient Airplane” is designed to cut fuel consumption by about 17 to 20 per cent compared with current airliners like the 767-300. It features a conventional layout with aft-mounted horizontal and vertical stabilisers. Basic features include:
  • fuselage cross-section compatible with LD3 containers
  • high-bypass ratio engines (10:1)
  • raked wingtips
  • increased use of composites
  • "more electric” systems design
  • advanced flight control system

History (Geschichte)
Boeing was working on very efficient designs for a 757 and 767 successor since at least 1999, but these concepts were then overshadowed by the "Sonic Cruiser” high-speed airliner project.
Project "Yellowstone” became a "reference” for the "Sonic Cruiser”. When the latter was finally shelved in December 2002, it re-emerged as the main thrust of Boeings future design work, having attracted favourable comments by the airlines which are still struggling for survival after the events of 11 September 2001.
Boeing Commercial president Alan Mulally said on 20 December 2002 that he hopes the new project will be "technically launched” in early 2004 "at the latest”, if there is enough airline interest. That would lead to a service entry in 2008.
On 29 January 2003, Boeing revealed a few details of the new project. At that time, it was officially christened the "7E7”.
